Creedence Clearwater Revival, generalmente referenciado como CCR o simplemente Creedence, es el nombre de una agrupación de rock clásico fusionado con country de fines de los 60, liderada por John Fogerty.
La banda comenzó como The Blue Velvets, formada por Tom Fogerty en El Cerrito, California en los años 1950. A mediados de 1960 la banda firma contrato con Fantasy Records y lanza su primer álbum: “Creedence Clearwater Revival†y su famoso single “Suzie Q†(partes 1 y 2). En el álbum Willy and the Poor Boys se notó gran crÃtica social, contrariedad al armamentismo nuclear y a las presiones polÃtico-militares. Permanecieron juntos durante unos años, pero luego de los sencillos “Have you ever seen the rain†y “Hey tonightâ€, se corrieron rumores de la separación del grupo. En febrero de 1971 Tom Fogerty se separó del grupo y siguió como solista, la calidad de la banda comenzó a caer y en octubre de 1972 se disolvió oficialmente la banda. Desde 1993 Creedence Clearwater Revival forma parte del Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
La historia Oficial.
El grupo comenzó como cualquier otra banda de pueblo. Buscando oportunidades recorrieron desde presentaciones en fiestas hasta llegar a ser en 1965 "The Gooliwoogs" una agrupación que tenÃa, por exigencia de su manager, un estilo muy "Beatle" tanto en su música como en su indumentaria (usaban pelucas blancas y uniformes militares como Los Beatles usaban smoking y peinados idénticos).
En 1968 bajo el lema "Hazlo u olvÃdalo" se decidieron a hacer lo que ellos sabÃan. Con la potencia en la voz y las letras de John Fogerty y la armoniosa rÃtmica de Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook y Doug Clifford, editaron los singles "Suzie Q partes 1 y 2" y "I put a Spell On You / Walk on The Water" que rompieron con todos los esquemas de la época asà como el álbum que los contenÃa, "Creedence Clearwater Revival" el cual abarcaba diversos estilos. Desde la psicodelia (Gloomy) hasta el crudo blues (Get Down Woman).
En 1969 editan "Bayou Country" en el cual abunda un estilo que caracterizó a CCR: el "Swamp Rock" o "Rock de los Pantanos". Con temas como "Born on the Bayou" y "Keep on Chooglin'". Sin dejar de mencionar a unas de las mejores letras de canción de todos los tiempos: "Proud Mary". LP que se convertirÃa rápidamente en disco de Platino.
Ya a estas alturas, "Creedence Clearwater Revival" habÃa destronado a "The Beatles" y a "The Rolling Stones" de los primeros puestos de los Rankings.
Ese mismo año editan "Green River y "Willy and the Poor Boys" que también se convierten en disco de platino.
En 1970 editan "Cosmo's Factory" el cual se convierte en Disco Triple Platino por haber vendido más de tres millones de copias. Hoy en dÃa se obtiene esta distinción con solo vender cien mil.
En 1971 editan "Pendulum" un álbum tal vez no muy comercial, pero es una verdadera pieza de colección para quienes conocen la banda.
En 1972, ya sin Tom Fogerty, editan "Mardi Gras" un álbum muy bien producido pero sin mucho brillo por la presión ejercida por parte de la discográfica, la cual, según Stu Cook, les obligó a hacer composiciones individuales. Doug Clfford dijo "nos dijeron que si no lo hacÃamos la banda se separaba. No nos dimos cuenta que esto pasarÃa de todas maneras y nos echarÃan la culpa a nosotros".
En la actualidad Creedence Clearwater Revival es una de las bandas que más se escucha y que más Hits tiene pese a su corta discografÃa (solo 65 canciones de las cuales hay 40 en las recopilaciones Chronicle y Chronicle II). El mismo Elvis Presley dijo hace casi cuatro décadas: "Creedence es una de esas bandas que en la actualidad se escucha mucho y se escuchará más dentro de treinta años".
